AT: Ricardio S01E07 (7)

Summary:

The episode starts with F & J saving PB from the Ice King. PB decides to throw a party for F & J for saving her.

There is some weird heart guy at the party giving massages. His name is Ricardio and hits it off right away with PB when he starts talking science. Finn gets jealous.

Finn thinks Ricardo is a villain, while Jake thinks he is just jealous.

They stalk/spy on him and see him yelling at the Ice King. Ricardio takes Ice King and throws him in a dumpster. Jake still thinks he is a good guy.

They confront him and Finn punches him. PB reprimands Finn and goes off with Ricardio. IK explains that Ricardio is actually HIS heart, who escaped his chest when he messed up an experiment.

Ricardio's plan is to take PB's heart and make out with it. Finn beats it into a lump and IK takes the heart and shoves it back in his chest.

Analysis:

It seems that even the Ice King dabbles in science

Finn is becoming more attached to PB

Ricardio is a crazy heart who the IK seems to not be able to live without.

Overall:

Ricardio is awesome, and actually more deranged than the IK.

AT: The Jiggler S01E06 (6)

Summary:

Finn and Jake return from helping some fruit. It turns out that F had swallowed some auto-tune device, and can sing and turn it on.

They are followed home by some whistling creature that looks like it has no certain head or butt. They call it Jiggler.

They all proceed to dance and play music, and break stuff til evening.

The next morning, Jiggler looks like he is dying. They realize that he is sick, and he starts to eat their drawings, and eventually starts throwing up. They plug all his holes from throwing up.

They take him back to the forest. and find a mother jiggler with baby jigglers.

After the mom rejects, F confronts her, and J explains about the Jiggler not smelling right.

They throw him in the Jiggler juice and mom accepts him again.

Analysis:

The Jiggler seems to be some robot/organic being, but you can't tell which end is whiceh

Overall:

There is a Jiggler family in the woods.

AT: The Enchiridion S01E05 (5)

Summary:

At the candy party, Cinnamon Bun almost causes Princess Bubblegum to fall to her death. Finn saves her, and she ends up telling Finn and Jake about the Enchiridion, a book that is meant for only heroes.

The book is guarded by a minotaur, and Finn and Jake go off on a quest to get the book.

On the way, they save some trolls stuck in a fiery pit, who go and destroy some old ladies. Jake gets ticked and throws them back in the lava.

Finn starts to doubt his heroism, and Jake explains that every trial is a way to test his heroism.. and then gets swallowed by a giant baby. F pickpockets him and kicks him in the groin and saves J.

They get to the castle to find the Enchiridion. He encounters a hooded figure who makes him fight a weird organ creature. F draws the line at killing a bug for killings sake. He reaches the Minotaur named Mannish Man, who is pretty ripped, and shows them the book.

The minotaur gives him the book and tells him he totally deserves it.

He reads the book and gets embarrassed (chapter 5)

Analysis:

Finn has a strong urge to be a hero, and not hurt anyone

Chapter 5 of the Enchiridion is on How to Kiss a Princess

Mannish Man is pretty cool and totally ripped.

Overall:

The Enchiridion is introduced, which has a major role in the series.

For some reason, the initial title cards showed Jake ripping out Jake's guts. Cartoon Network said "Um, No."

Here are the rejected pieces:

AT: Tree Trunks S01E04 (4)

Summary:

While playing with swords, Tree Trunks (a small green elephant seen in S01E01) invites Finn and Jake to have some apple pie. F & J devour it all and TT tells them about the apple of apples: The Crystal Gem Apple, found in the Evil Dark Forest.

After running through a variety of creatures, in which TT puts on WAY too much makeup to help seduce them with her "womanly ways,"  they discover the legendary apple. The Crystal Gem Apple is guarded by a Crystal Guardian, who copies our heroes' every move. Eventually F & J find a way to beat the guardian and allow TT to take a bite of the apple....

and Tree Trunks promptly explodes. F & J scream.

The episode ends with TT laughing and running through a crystal place.

Analysis:

Tree Trunks is an old, bonkers elephant who likes to use her feminine ways/sexuality to get what she wants.

Tree Trunks lives in a small house that may consist only of a kitchen and dining table.

The evil, dark forest has a variety of crystal, flesh and wooden creatures.

Taking a bite of the crystal apple makes you explode and sends you to a crystal place/zone/world (or possibly entraps you inside of it).

Overall:

We are introduced to another mainstay in th AT universe. Tree Trunks is a delicate, old green miniature elephant that loves to cook. She is not the most adventuresome, but she is confident enough to try and seduce others to get what she needs/wants.

AT: Prisoners of Love S01E03 (3)

Summary:

During sledding, Finn and Jake encounter penguins and run into the first villain of the series: The Ice King. The Ice King accuses them of trespassing, and brings snow creatures to life. F & J beat them up real good.

Ice King freezes them, and brings them home, where we find he has had a bunch of princesses in a dungeon for weeks. Wildberry, LSP, Hot Dog, Slime princess among them. He intends on marrying one or more of them.

LSP mentions it has not been a lot of fun. Ice King tries to get all the people involved to play in a band for fun. Finn mentions that IK should go get more fun stuff,

Finn suggests that everyone should act like they are having fun. IK returns and thinks everyone had fun because he left.. IK is invited into the cell where dungeon, where he is knocked down and Finn tells him that he can't help him figure out the princesses. IK gets punched in the beard, and has a vision of flying nude, where he encounters the Cosmic Owl, whose voice sounds like Finn.

IK wakes up to being tickled by the penguins. Finn is asked to marry the slime princess, but Slime Princess gets disgusted when Jake tells her that Finn "pees his bed, like all the time."

Analysis:

Ice King loves trail mix, esp. yogurt chips.

Finn broke his flute when he tried picking a lock on a sad ogre's heart.

Ice King excuses himself to go potty in the bathroom (maybe he goes somewhere else?), which is kind of strange because PB referenced using the restroom in Episode 2.

IK has a drum set with "#1 BABE" on it. Was this a previous band he was in?

IK seems to really care if people think he is a fun guy.

In a vision, the owl calls him a sociopath.

The Cosmic Owl appears for the first time.

Overall:

We see that the Ice King, as powerful as he is, has some insecurity issues, as well as yearning for love. He may be a romantic, but also seems to have control issues, as he likes to trap the princesses until he figures out who he likes best. He is mostly Neutral Evil.

Adventure Time S01E02: Trouble in Lumpy Space (2)

Summary:

During a Mellow Tea Ceremony (which kind of sucks), Lumpy Space Princess accidentally bites Jake and he starts to get the Lumps (he is turning into a lumpy space guy).

LSP, Finn and Jake travel to Lumpy Space via portal to get the antidote for the Lumps, which needs to happen before sunset (werewolf rules).

Upon travel to Lumpy Space, we meet PB's parents, whom she likes to yell at. LSP seems to be a spoiled blob.

Her friend Melissa (and ex-Brad) come to help out. She gets distracted by Promcoming, but they end up at Makeout Point. The guys who control the antidote are considered "smooth posers" ...who apparently like to go against Lumpy Space society and be smooth. LSP pisses them off, of course and heads off to Promcoming.

Jake goes full lumpy and Finn intentionally becomes lumpy in order to make a huge jump. Lumpy Jake becomes a tool, and eventually so does Lumpy Finn.

After Jake is cured, Finn is as well. The episode ends with a huge dance party.

Analysis:

LSP yells at the frog portal that "It's 2009!" ...so apparently the AT world is an alternate, post-nuclear event universe... and not the future. Or maybe time just doesn't mean anything and it is strictly coincidence.

Lumpiness makes you act and talk like a valley girl.

Smooth people are not welcome in Lumpy Space.

LSP and Brad have a history, which includes Chili Cheese Fries. It seems according to LSP, that she is not quite over it.

Overall:

I am a LSP fan, so I like this episode a lot... She is kind of that annoying person that we all know. We have seen that this show will not take place all in the same world, but also has the ability to jump dimensions/universes.

Adventure Time S01E01: Slumber Party Panic (1)

Summary:

Princess Bubblegum w/Finn uses chemistry (incl. explosive diarrhea) to bring the dead candy people to life. Whoops! ZOMBIES... with a thirst for... SUGAR.

PB and Finn run to the Candy Kingdom, where the candy citizens are gathered in a ballroom and told that it is a big slumber party (so PB can make an antidote). Finn makes a royal promise not to tell anyone, because apparently candy people explode when they get super freaked out (Starchy blows up).

Finn keeps the secret from Jake, and they keep busy by playing Truth or Dare. Jake dares Finn to tell the secret. Finn figures out something is going on while the zombies begin to attack. Dance parties ensues as zombies start to break in.

Finn convinces everyone to cover their eyes, and they start swinging bats as if at pinatas. They kill all the zombies, and proceed to eat their guts.

Finn breaks the royal promise and the Guardians attack. The Gumball Guardians make Finn answer a simple math problem, and he avoids a severe punishment. The Guardians explode and everything seems to turn back in time to normal...

PB realizes she was too smart to finish the serum. The finished serum brings back all the dead relatives (and Starchy).

Analysis:

We find out that candy people blow up when scared really bad.

During T or D, We find out that Mr. Cupcake is chocolate under his wrapper.

Jake and Lady Rainacorn play 7 Minutes in Heaven (hasn't been established yet that they are a couple).

Breaking a royal promise is punishable by slave labor.

Starchy, while seemingly made from starch and possibly a potato, is actually a malted milk ball.

If Finn is still 12 (as established in the pilot), I am guessing PB is 19 at the youngest.

Overall:

Good start to the series. Establishes PB as the ruler of the CK, and a chemist/mad scientist. Finn and Jake are just buddies, Tree Trunks makes an appearance.

We see some simple glimpses into the CK, mainly that obv. everyone is made of candy and they have defensive capabilities with the large Gumball Guardians.

Adventure Time: PILOT (00)

Back in 2007, Nickalodeon aired a short about a boy and his dog. The video got lots of hits, Nickalodeon ended up passing on the series (TWICE!), before the show found it's way to Cartoon Network, where it blew up. The series was created by Pendleton Ward, and also had a large amount of creative staff who came over from FLAPJACK (which is also a pretty great show).

...Now normally,  I don't post the video in the actual post, but the pilot is hard to find so here you go:

Click here ------> Adventure Time Pilot

Summary:

We meet Penn ... who would later become Finn (the human) and Jake (the dog). In this quick adventure, they see Princess Bubblegum's  (PB) Rainacorn (half rainbow/unicorn). Now Rainacorn doesn't speak in Korean, but in gibberish (although they can understand her).  After chasing her to the Ice Kingdom, and fighting some monsters,  they proceed to rescue PB from the Ice King.

IK fights both Finn and Jake. After getting frozen, Finn travels to Mars and gets a pep talk from Abe Lincoln. He rescues PB from a flying Ice King. After the rescue, Finn and Jake run off after some ninjas.

Analysis:

Well, this is a one-off so I will consider this non-canon.  But there are some differences:

IK calls Jake a "magic dog" ...but I am not sure that's correct.

IK loses his crown and falls to the earth. The power that he gets from his crown is central to his story.

Abe Lincoln is on Mars, which happens again later, I believe.

Finn is 12 and Jake is 28, which seems about right. If Jake goes by dog years, that means he is 3 human years old... although to be honest, he seems like a 28 year old guy.

Rainacorn is called Lady Rainacorn in the series, and is not owned by anyone, and is simply Jake's girlfriend.

Overall:

Finn is a little extra hyper than he is in the regular series. He also moves with a little bit more rubbery motion, but it's a pilot, so that's to be expected. Also, his hat wraps around his head, vs in the series, the hat runs into his body.

As an added bonus, Here is the animatics (w/sound) for the show:

Adventure Time Source Books

Before we begin, there are a few books on Adventure Time that I highly recommend.

The first is The Art of OOO.

This is a book on the Art of Adventure Time. I absolutely LOVE art books, and this one is as good as it gets. It gives you background on character development, and I will be using this book a lot as the series goes on.

Here is a interior review by PARKA BLOGS (one of the best art book reviewers out there):

The next 2 books are:

These books give insight into the title cards that showcase a piece of art before every episode.

...and finally:

Well, that is it! On to the series!

WHAT TIME IS IT?!

ADVENTURE TIME!

Hey there!

Before I start on this epic review of every episode of Adventure Time, let me give you some background:

I first learned about this show a few years ago, but I had fallen out of cartoons for quite a while. Finally one day, I decided to give it a shot, and found it to be the most awesome, weird, out of this world, lovable cartoon I had seen. It was obvious the creators loved the characters, and the dynamics of their relationships was very interesting.

So here we go. I will try and attempt to do all the shows, shorts, and specials in chronological order (according to airdate), and do my best to try and unravel the mysteries of OOO.

I am open to anyone who wants to post and bring up any points/mistakes as I work on the series. As of today, if I am correct, the show has about a season and a half before it is wrapped up.

Maybe, if I am very very lucky, and a hard worker... I can catch up and watch it in real time. (def. no promises though!)

Welcome to the blog.

Hey everyone,

I know what you are thinking. What the hell is this, and why the hell am I here?

To answer those questions:

What the hell is this?

This is a blog I am making to help chart my shows, movies and other stuff that I enjoy.  What does that entail? Well, movies, comics, picture books, cartoons, and whatever the hell else I like to spend my time doing. It's just that I will try and analyze the subject at hand and try and give a good review on it. That's it.

I will be focusing on movie & tv reviews, both old and new (there is a surprisingly large amount of movies I have never seen) as well as comics and literature.

I have named this "Hold on, Dreamland" because I am notorious for falling asleep when I am trying to watch something or a movie. Call it exhaustion from my other duties (dad, teaching, art) or call it the beginning stages of narcolepsy (and I don't say that lightly)... but I am hoping if I go in with the strong intention of a review, I will be able to get more out of it.

Why the hell am I here?

I don't know. You may be a friend, or acquaintance, or you may not even understand English, and this is just a bunch of crap. Whatever it is, I hope you like what you see, and maybe you will check something out after reading what I have to say.

...ANNNNNNNND if no one reads this, its ok. It will kind of be like an online journal.

Thanks! -J
